Booking and visits

Getting started, what to bring, and how scheduling works.

Do I need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist?

No. You can book a physiotherapy assessment directly with us. Most extended-health insurance plans also do not require a referral. Check with your provider if you are unsure.

How do I book an appointment at Thrive Physiotherapy?

Book online through our contact page, or call the clinic at (587) 405-3174. Business hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm.

How long is my first physiotherapy visit?

Your initial assessment runs 45 minutes. We use that time to listen to your history, examine the area, identify what is driving the pain, start treatment, and write your personalized plan.

Will I see the same therapist every visit?

Yes. The same clinician sees you from your first assessment through discharge. You will not need to re-explain your story each time.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice and no-shows are charged the full appointment fee.

What should I bring and wear to my first visit?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area we are assessing. Bring your insurance card, a list of current medications, any imaging or surgical reports if available, and a list of your goals.

Can I bring a support person to my visit?

Yes. You are welcome to bring a partner, parent, friend, or caregiver. For paediatric visits we require a parent or legal guardian to be present.

How early should I arrive for my appointment?

Please arrive 10 minutes early for your first visit to complete intake paperwork. For follow-up visits, arrive 5 minutes before your scheduled time.

Insurance paperwork and direct billing
02 / 07

Insurance and billing

Direct billing, plans we cover, and what you pay.

Do you bill insurance directly?

Yes. We direct bill 16+ extended-health insurers so you only pay your portion (if any) at the end of the visit.

Which insurance providers do you bill directly?

Alberta Blue Cross, Pacific Blue Cross, Canada Life, Manulife, Sun Life, Green Shield Canada, Desjardins, Industrial Alliance, Equitable Life, Empire Life, Beneva, Chambers of Commerce, ClaimSecure, GMS, NIHB, and WCB Alberta. If yours is not listed, ask us, we likely still bill it.

What if my insurance plan is not on your list?

Just ask. We likely still bill it. If we cannot, we will provide a paid receipt you can submit to your provider for reimbursement.

Are physiotherapy services covered by Alberta Health Care?

No. AHCIP does not cover private physiotherapy. Most extended-health employer plans do, and we can bill them directly.

What does an initial physiotherapy assessment cost?

Please contact the clinic for current rates. Most patients pay only their plan co-pay because we bill insurance directly.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, debit, and cash. Most patients have nothing to pay at the end of the visit because we bill insurance directly.

Do you provide receipts for tax or insurance purposes?

Yes. We issue official receipts for every visit. These can be submitted to your insurance provider or used for medical expense tax claims.

Do you offer payment plans for uninsured services?

Talk to us at reception. If a treatment plan extends over many visits, we can usually work out a billing schedule that fits your budget.

Hands-on physiotherapy treatment
03 / 07

What to expect

How treatment works, from assessment to discharge.

What happens at my first physiotherapy visit?

Your therapist listens to your history, examines the area, identifies what is driving the pain, starts treatment, and writes a plain-language plan with goals, timelines, and home exercises matched to your sport or activity.

How many physiotherapy visits will I need?

It depends on the condition. Your written treatment plan includes an estimated number of visits and a timeline. We adjust as your body responds.

Will physiotherapy treatment hurt?

Most treatment is comfortable. Some hands-on techniques may cause brief discomfort. We always work at your pace and explain what we are doing before we do it.

Will I get exercises to do at home?

Yes. Your written plan includes home exercises you can actually follow, matched to your sport, work, or daily activity.

What if I need to see a doctor or specialist?

We coordinate with your family doctor, surgeon, or trainer when it helps your recovery. You do not need to relay messages between providers.

How is physiotherapy different from massage therapy?

Physiotherapy is a regulated health profession focused on assessment, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Massage therapy focuses on soft-tissue manipulation for relaxation and pain relief. Physiotherapists can use hands-on techniques but also prescribe exercise, modalities, and coordinate medical care.

How is physiotherapy different from chiropractic care?

Both treat musculoskeletal pain. Chiropractors focus on spinal and joint adjustment as the primary tool. Physiotherapists use a broader toolkit including manual therapy, exercise prescription, modalities, and movement retraining. At Thrive you can access both under one roof. See all services.

Yes. We assess and treat all three. Treatment includes hands-on therapy, dry needling when appropriate, exercise, and identifying contributing factors at work or home.

Do you treat sports injuries?

Yes. We work with runners, weekend warriors, and recreational athletes on sprains, strains, tendinopathies, post-surgical sports rehab, and return-to-sport progressions.

Do you treat children at Thrive?

Yes. Our director Radha is paediatric-specialized and provides developmental and rehabilitative care for infants, children, and youth. A parent or legal guardian must be present.

Do you offer pelvic floor physiotherapy?

Yes. Radha is a Certified Pelvic Floor Therapist and provides internal and external assessment and treatment for pelvic health concerns including incontinence, pelvic pain, pre and postnatal care, and core dysfunction.

Do you offer lymphatic drainage and post-surgical recovery?

Yes. Karthikeyan is Vodder-certified in manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) and complete decongestive therapy (CDT). Mobile in-home lymphatic care is also available across Edmonton for post-surgical and lymphedema patients.

Do you treat post-surgery patients (hip, knee, shoulder, back)?

Do you treat TMJ and jaw pain?

Yes. We treat jaw pain, clicking, grinding, and limited opening through manual therapy, exercise, and education on contributing factors like clenching.

Do you offer virtual or in-home physiotherapy?

Yes to both. Virtual sessions work well for follow-ups, home-exercise check-ins, and certain assessments. We recommend the first visit in person when possible. In-home physiotherapy is available within the Edmonton service area, useful for patients with mobility limitations or post-surgical recovery.

MVA and WCB physiotherapy
05 / 07

MVA and WCB claims

Treatment under auto insurance and Workers' Compensation.

How does physiotherapy work after a motor vehicle accident (MVA)?

Book an initial assessment and bring your accident details (claim number, adjuster contact, date of accident). We open the auto insurance claim, bill the insurer directly, and provide structured rehab with regular progress reporting. You focus on recovery, we handle the paperwork.

Do I need a referral or pre-approval for MVA physiotherapy?

No. In Alberta you can begin physiotherapy under the Diagnostic and Treatment Protocols (DTPR) without a referral after an MVA. Your first 21 visits within 90 days are typically covered under the protocols.

How soon should I start physiotherapy after a car accident?

As soon as you feel ready, ideally within the first 72 hours to two weeks. Early treatment usually reduces long-term symptoms and supports a faster return to normal life.

Do you accept WCB Alberta claims?

Yes. We work directly with WCB on approval, progress reporting, and the graduated return-to-work plan. Treatment is functional and designed around the demands of your specific role.

Who handles the claim paperwork for MVA and WCB?

We do. Our reception team and your clinician handle approvals, progress reports, and direct billing so you can focus on getting better.
